Pregnancy Fitness Coaching

My clients have either never moved in their life, want to get back to fitness before baby comes or want to carry on their regular exercise safely with an expert.

Gentle fitness – or just movement in general is great for your pregnancy and there is lots of evidence to say that active pregnancies lead to better births.  The aim is to get baby into an optimal position ready for labour and get you strong and healthy in order to cope with birth.
You might be finding that your usual exercise classes aren’t now suitable for pregnancy – the options are for high impact usually and not for pregnancy which is specialist. You can carry on your favourite exercise with me, advising you on the modifications or alternatives as you go through the pregnancy.

I ensure that we don’t have any extra pressure on the core and pelvic floor with specialist techniques.

For those who have never been  involved with exercise, pregnancy is a great time to start and we will do some really gentle stuff with you to just get you moving, and help you to fight off the aches and pains that pregnancy can bring.

You might be surprised at what you can do with the right help!

If you are pre-natal please take a look at my doula page – it’s very useful for expectant mum’s considering their journey into motherhood.

When can I start my pregnancy fitness?

Generally, exercise in pregnancy through the first trimester (0-12 weeks) is not recommended, therefore I am happy to start helping you from week 13 onwards and after completing a health questionnaire online, to make sure we are ready to work together. The first session would include a movement assessment and massage. If I feel you’re not quite ready, I will refer you to a specialist womens health physiotherapist for assessment and therapy to get you where you need to be.

Pregnancy Fitness Coaching Sessions

I ask my ladies to book 10 pregnancy fitness sessions, because in reality, not much can be achieved with any less and I don’t want you to feel disappointed if you book say, four, and don’t get to where we’d like you to be.

You need to give it time, work your body gently and results will come – but as they say, all in good time.

Part of the training is getting your mind switched onto it – so that you look forward to it every week, plan it in the diary, include it as an essential like getting the shopping or doing the washing.

Post-Natal Fitness Coaching

Nothing  takes the sheen off the experience more than prolapses, incontinence and separated abdominals! It drags us down and challenges us in ways that no one should have to endure. It can even damage social relationships and career prospects if it becomes chronic.

Whilst we usually realise that pregnancy is a time where exercise must be gentle and guided by an expert, few of us know that the same applies to the post-natal period. We often think that it should be easy to ‘snap back’ and there is so much pressure on women to do that and ‘lose the baby weight’ quickly. In an effort to do so, too many women are either causing new damage or exacerbating the problems they were trying to resolve.

Many women, myself included, eventually discover that their abdominal wall has weakened and the separation has not healed. This is called diastasis recti and can cause problems from back pain to pelvic floor weakness. It’s very easily worsened by launching into a fitness programme that has not been prescribed by an experienced post-natal fitness coach.

Rediscovering your sparkle, one session at a time

My input as a post-natal fitness coach has really helped so many women rediscover their sparkle – I love to watch my clients relearn what their body can do and fall in love with movement once again. They often come to me with low confidence, pain and some emotional distress at how their body has changed. They leave a session feeling so much brighter, sometimes simply just by having a laugh with me and letting go of some of their emotional tension. The power of laughter on wellbeing is massive!

When can I start my fitness?

I can’t do anything with you until you’ve had your 6-week post-natal check at the GP or with a private women’s health physiotherapist (I can refer you to one if you’d like).

Once you have that out of the way, I ask you to fill in a health questionnaire online to make sure we are ready to work together.  The first session would include abdominal and movement assessment and massage.  If I feel you’re not quite ready, I will refer you to a  specialist womens health physiotherapist for assessment and therapy to get you where you need to be.

This may feel like a pain and you just want to get started but we must be careful not to make any more problems or cause you any damage.
